Hurricane Katrina was one of the most destructive hurricanes to hit the US. It struck in 2005 and proved to be the most expensive natural disaster ever in the United States. Many people were not insured and a lot of property not to mention life, was washed away.

Hurricane Katrina is the sixth deadliest hurricane among Atlantic hurricanes. The death toll in the hurricane stood to 1,836. The reason for so many deaths was not just the hurricane but also the accompanying floods.

The word hurricane originated from Hurican, the god of evil of the Carib people of the Caribbean. Hurricane according to mythology was inspired by the Mayan god Hurakan, who destroyed humans with floods and storms.

Hurricanes are tropical storms that blow with wind speed of 74 miles per hour (65 kilometers per hour). The word ‘typhoon’ is the same as hurricane but referred to by a different name.
