The new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge has opened earlier than anticipated. The budget for this bridge is said to be $6.4 billion. Monday night witnessed drivers going past the bay for the first time, just hours before the busy day would start.
The beautiful suspension bridge with its imposing white tower has got a thumbs-up for its safety factor and is heralded as an aesthetic masterpiece. Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom was quoted as saying, “I hope that the progress that’s being represented at this moment is for a generation to dream big dreams and to do big things.”
However, the celebrations were low-key; there were no fireworks or pedestrians lined up for the inauguration. The old bridge was damaged during the 1989 Lomo Prieta Earthquake and the new span bridge is its replacement. It is designed to withstand the strongest of earthquakes. Brian Kelly who is in charge of the state’s Business, Transporation and Housing Agency said, “(This project) has at times inspired me, challenged me, frustrated me and today, after seeing the final product, it impresses me with its beauty, its grace and its strength.”
