Phlebitis is vein inflammation, particularly experienced in the legs. There is a condition called thrombophlebitis, which happens when phlebitis leads to blood clotting or thrombosis, in the deep veins of the legs. Such clots, if they travel to legs can cause pulmonary embolism, which is may be fatal.
Phlebitis symptoms are in the form of pain or burning sensation along vein, swelling or edema, redness in the body etc. The causes of Phlebitis are bacterial in nature, mechanical, chemical, genetic and even alcohol abuse.
There have been many cases of phlebitis, some of the notable ones being of former United States president Richard Nixon, former American vice-president Dan Quayle. Mario Lanza, Hollywood star of the 40s and 50 died from Phlebitis in 1959 when a blood clot from his legs reached his lungs and affected them. Kate Winslet also got phlebitis in her leg, when she was shooting for Sense and Sensibility .
Phlebitis’s treatment plan is on a long-term basis and they are related to reducing the risk of complications. Your healthcare provider may prescribe an anti-inflammatory medication like ibuprofen. Surgery may be needed when phlebitis affects circulation and everyday activities. It may also be needed to keep the condition from deteriorating deep vein thrombosis or a pulmonary embolism. Surgical treatment is done either in the hospital or outpatient by a qualified vascular surgeon.
