At least 29 people died – including 22 children – after a gunman, a teacher’s son opened fire at an elementary school in Connecticut, in what is described as the ‘worst school shooting in American history’. Police rushed to Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newton after they received news about shots being fired by a gunman in the principal’s office and kindergarten class at 9.35 am.

The gunman has been identified as Ryan Lanza, 24; whose mother taught at the same school.  He is said to have gone from classroom to classroom firing at students with a .223 caliber rifle, particularly targeting his mother’s classroom. Ryan Lanza’s father was found dead at his Newtown home at around 2pm according to reports. It is not clear if Lanza shot himself or if he was shot dead by police officers.

A second man was also seen running from the school right after the killing and was taken into custody at about 1 pm. Lanza carried four weapons on his person including two handguns, a rifle and was waring a rifle and a bullet proof vest and military gear.  A teacher narrated that children were traumatized, shocked and ran for help and the classroom had turned into a ‘war zone’.

Here is the picture of Ryan Lanza involved in Connecticut elementary school shooting. His brother Adam Lanza, 20, used his ID card to shoot children and is dead.

The shooting is the latest in a series of high-profile gun crimes in American schools and colleges,  that is especially shocking given the age of the students involved. It is believed that the school principal and the psychologist are dead.

A parent, 40, said that the killer had barged into the door of the room where they were hiding. She said,  ‘I want to thank my child’s music teacher. She saved their lives. The shooter kept banging on the door screaming: “Let me in! Let me in!” but he didn’t get in.’Now I have to explain to my nine-year-old son that his friends won’t be coming back. How am I supposed to do that?’

Alberta Bajraliu 41, feared for her nine year old daughter Venesa. She narrated the experience, : ‘I was one of the first there and they were bringing children out, carrying them out. One girl came out and her face was covered in blood and she had bits of meat from other people in her hair. It was terrible.’Another girl just looked shocked. They brought one girl out and I thought it was my daughter. They asked me: ‘Does she have black trousers?’ and I said no as Venesa had jeans.’When I saw her I just felt so relieved. She has not spoken much about what happened. She said she was in an art class and the teacher closed the door and they were waiting until they could get out.”

Barack Obama has condemned the killing since it is not only the worst incident of school shooting in the US but it may also unfortunately; leave many children traumatized, considering the age of students involved.  The White House spokesman Mr Carney on behalf of Barack Obama said that the president was informed about then shooting at 10:30 am and he was deeply aggrieved. “I think it’s important on a day like today to view this, as I know the president as a father does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do, which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected,” Mr Carney said. Obama ordered flags to half-staff nationwide in tribute to the victims.

“I offered Governor Malloy my condolences on behalf of the nation, and made it clear he will have every resource he needs to investigate,” Obama said, noting the country has had “too many of these tragedies in the last few years.”

“Each time I learn the news I react not as a president, but as anyone else would — as a parent. And that was especially true today,” Obama said. “I know there’s not a parent in America who doesn’t feel the same overwhelming grief that I do.”

“They had their entire lives ahead of them — birthdays, graduations, weddings, kids of their own,” Obama said of the children who were killed, tearing up. “Among the fallen were also teachers, men and women who devoted their lives to helping children fulfill their dreams.”

Sandy Hook Elementary School is located on Dickinson Drive in Newtown. Connecticut.
