Scalp psoriasis is a condition that is associated to psoriasis. It is characterized by the presence of inflamed, dandruff-like patches on the scalp. People with this condition find this scaly rash very embarrassing and even uncomfortable. The excessive scaling occurs as a result of rapid skin cell growth on the affected areas. Those with severe scalp psoriasis have to put up with hair loss.
The back of the head is the area primarily affected by scalp psoriasis, though it may also occur in other parts or the entire scalp. Compromised immunity, stress and hormonal changes are factors that could increase the chances of developing the condition. It is very important for anyone suffering from this skin condition to be patient and not scrape the crust off from the scalp for it will only result in excessive flaking. The condition may clear up even without treatment; still, there are plenty of medications and products that can help with scalp psoriasis.
Causes of scalp psoriasis
Researchers are puzzled over the real cause of scalp psoriasis, but it is believed there is a genetic connection about its occurrence. Around one-third of the sufferers reported cases of the condition running in the family. The condition is also attributed to certain environmental influences, including irritants in the air, medications and food. Although the exact culprit for the condition is not known, the outbreaks are caused by immune system malfunction which instigates abnormal skin cell growth and rashes.
Treatment of scalp psoriasis
There is a variety of ways to treat this condition, and these are:
- Topical medications
These often come in the form of lotions, ointments, creams, foams, shampoos and gels which are helpful in relieving the symptoms and control further breakouts.
- Salicylic acid
This is an active ingredient which helps in loosening the scales as well as in alleviating itchy scalp.
- Prescription medications
Doctors may prescribe medications to treat scalp psoriasis, such as those that contain steroids and vitamin D3 or derivatives of vitamin A. Steroid injections may also be used as well as systemic drugs for severe breakouts.
- Ultraviolet light
This treatment option involves exposing one’s scalp to high intensity UV light which helps in getting rid of skin plaques as well as speed up the healing process
