One of India’s most famous chefs, food-writers and host of numerous cooking shows, Tarla Dalal, died on November 6, 2013. She had two cooking shows on television ‘Tarla Dalal show’ and ‘Cook it Up with Tarla Dalal’. Her first cook book was ‘The Pleasure of Vegetarian Cooking’ in 1947. Since then she wrote more than 115 books which sold more than 3 million books Her food website has the highest traffic in India. She was also awarded Padma Shri by Government of India, in 1997.
Born in Pune, 1936. Tarla started taking cooking classes at her home in 1966. She began to experiment with different forms of cuisines and wrote her first cook book in 1974. ‘The Pleasures of Vegetarian Cooking’ created history and is known to be a classic cookbook in the world, having sold close to 2,00,000 copies. She married in 1960 to her husband Navin Dalal, who died in 2005. Tarla died at her home on Napean Sea Road,on November 6, 2013. She is survived by her three children.
